ABOUT REKERO

Rekero is a luxury tented camp that sits in the midst of Kenya’s Masai Mara ecosystem in a quiet and exclusive location that is also conveniently close to the main Mara airstrip.

Rekero Camp is home not only to the greatest concentration and diversity of wildlife in the world but also to the Beaton and Looseyia families, who continue to oversee Rekero, ensuring that the legacy of their forefathers is upheld and that guests enjoy a truly memorable Masai Mara experience.

Location + Area

The camp is located very close to the confluence of the Mara and Talek rivers and sits on a picturesque bend in the Talek River in one of the most game-rich areas of the Masai Mara Reserve.

This eco-camp is ideally situated for the annual migration, which is the movement of over one million wildebeest and two hundred thousand zebra from the Serengeti through the Mara in Kenya.

About the Area

The Masai Mara Game Reserve and adjacent conservation area totals 750 square-miles and forms the northern tip of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. The Masai Mara offers wonderful scenery and an amazing abundance of wildlife. Every year it hosts what is now recognised as the greatest show on earth, the Great Migration which takes place between July and October. The Mara River is the greatest obstacle they have to face, the currents can be strong and the banks steep, but it is the gigantic Nile crocodiles that are to be their biggest obstacle. Over a million wildebeest and two hundred thousand zebra are on this endless journey in search of fresh grasslands. Typically the herds continue their journey south in November but have been known to stay into January. The Masai Mara is also home to one of the great fighting tribes of Africa, the Maasai whose culture is both fascinating and truly unique.

Camp History

The Beaton family arrived in Africa in 1889, pioneering Kenya's conservation movement in 1946. The conservation tradition continues today at Rekero where old time hospitality and a unique insight into the Masai Mara's wildlife, cultures, flora and fauna are offered.

Captain Duncan Beaton (1864 – 1943) was a well-known and familiar figure in the life of Kenya. From the Isle of Skye on the West Coast of Scotland, he first arrived in Africa in 1889 as an agent for the African Lakes Corporation, a company formed to carry on the work of Livingstone in the suppression of the slave trade and the opening up of the commerce of Central Africa.

“Ken Beaton (1905 - 1954), Chief Game Warden (Kenya) and first Director of Uganda’s National Parks was a great man. His ideas on what a park should be and how it should be run were possibly more progressive than any in Africa at the time. The great thing about Beaton was that he was not hidebound by outdated colonial attitudes to the Africans.”

“Ron Beaton is one of the most experienced guides in Africa. On foot with his help I got within 20 yards of feeding elephants, and sat on a rock watching a lioness doze in the last warmth of the day.”

Ron and his wife Pauline developed the vision of Rekero over 16 years ago. Gerard Beaton took over the responsibility of Rekero years ago. Gerard has grown up in the Mara and after reading Geography and Anthropology at Newcastle University became a Professional guide in 1995. Gerard’s younger sister Deborah (Dudu) Beaton, became the fifth member of the family to be involved with Rekero when she arrived to share the management with Gerard and Jackson as they expanded their enterprise. In 2011 Dudu began work on the latest project in the Mara, Naboisho Camp.

Accommodation + Facilities

The camp caters for up to 20 guests in nine tents, two of which are family tents, laid out under shady trees along the river's edge.

The spacious tents have been designed combining the traditional bush style with a fresh modern feel focusing on attention to detail. All tents have en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and showers.

Each tent also has a large verandah with a day bed for relaxing after game drives and is attended by a personal butler.

The camp has two common areas under canvas for guest dining and relaxation. The larger area is surrounded by shady trees and lush lawn while the smaller area is built on a platform extending over the river bank.

Rekero is managed by experienced second generation Kenyans, Clea Earnshaw and Conway Sassoon. They are backed by an expert team of professional Maasai safari guides who were recently named as the ‘Best Guiding Team in Africa’ by the Good Safari Guide.

Guides and camp crew have worked together for many years and provide guests with an in depth and truly authentic Masai Mara experience.

Every year the camp is closed for two months to allow the bush to regenerate and the wildlife to return to the site, leaving a fresh and recovered wilderness for the next dramatic season.

November 2012

"Each tent (I'll call it a tent but it was very luxurious) is situated with a view of the Talek River. From the comfort of your bed you can gaze out at zebra, hippos, elephants, wildebeest, baboons, topi, gazelle and giraffe stopping for an afternoon drink. There are some places on earth that are magical. Rekero is one of them."
"All in all I have to say that all of the 5 star reviews are there for a reason"

Jackson, tells the story of lion cub Mara, cheetah Sita and her five cheetah cubs, and leader of the lion pride, Fang, as they face the challenges that life on the Maasai Mara brings. It's an epic tale of survival, love and courage, sure to strike a chord with wildlife-lovers.
