The camp is perfectly located for guests to experience every aspect of the Maasai Mara wilderness. Wildlife viewing and bird watching can be done by specially adapted vehicles or outside the park on foot, in the company of experienced Il Dorobo and Maasai guides who encourage guests to see and experience the Mara through their eyes, sharing a world of small and large wonders that only they truly know and understand. Guests can arrange full days in the bush with picnic lunches or shorter excursions returning to enjoy the tranquillity of the camp.
Sharing the cultural aspect of Maasai Mara life with guests is a priority at Rekero either in camp or with a visit to one of the villages our guides come from. This is a highly personal experience that the guides operate with sensitivity to ensure it remains both unobtrusive and genuine. Picnics in the bush and sundowners also feature along with dawn flights in a hot air balloon (additional cost).

For those who want a more relaxing Maasai Mara experience or a break from being in a vehicle, Rekero is ideally placed for game viewing from the camp. Sitting quietly on the camp lawn for an hour guests might see more wonders than in a year of their busy lives. Rekero invites you to be still because there is so much going on around it. A number of regular visitors share this riverbank with Rekero. These include the small; banded mongoose scurrying across the lawn, African monarch butterflies fluttering about, the big; elephants coming to forage on sausage tree fruit, the feathered; a wealth of resident camp birds and the furred; the “Brigadier” who is an elderly male buffalo who guards the entrance to camp. All these can be surveyed from the deck over the river or from the river rocks below camp.

Game Drives

Game drives are available from Rekero Camp sites in the morning, afternoon or all day. Wildlife viewing game drives are tailored to your particular interest. On the other hand, you can take the day off, sit back and listen to the bush chorus as you read a book and/or slowly drift off to sleep.

Bush Picnics

For those keen to get in some early game viewing or maximize their time watching game our camp chef can prepare a delicious packed breakfast or lunch.

Balloon Safari

Balloon safaris are a romantic and evocative way of experiencing the wilderness of East Africa, as you silently fly over the plains teeming with herds of wildlife in the early morning. Typically, a balloon safari begins around 6 am and lasts for around 1-2 hours. Balloon safaris (additional cost) in the Serengeti take off from designated sites in the nearby Seronera area. The safari is followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush, a fitting end to a memorable flight in the wild.

Walking Safari

There is no better way to truly experience the wilderness of East Africa than on foot. Get up close to herds of giraffe nibbling nonchalantly on the tops of the ever-present acacias—until a sudden halt in activity more often than not indicates the presence of lion nearby. Buffalo, elephant, hyena and topi are some of the other species regularly encountered by guests.

Please note that due to the location of Rekero Camp, walking safaris are located 1 hour away and will be available at an additional charge.

Cultural Visits

Rekero Camp’s guides are mostly drawn from local Maasai communities, allowing you a unique insight into the rich culture that defines this corner of East Africa. Rekero guides are always eager to share their culture with interested guests, and visits to nearby communities and homesteads are easily arranged.

Please note that due to the location of Rekero Camp, cultural visits are located 4 hours away and will be available at an additional charge.

Family Safaris

At Rekero you are just 50 meters away from the M1 (migration highway) and its by far the most spectacular place from which to witness the mass migration of wildebeest crossing the Talek River below. Families with children of 6 years and over bunk down in 2 airy family tents with full en-suite facilities. Their personal game-viewing vehicle comes with a highly-skilled guide equipped with amazing bush-wise facts, anecdotes and stories that will keep the kids entertained for hours.
