About Rekero camp
When it comes to witnessing the world-famous Great Migration, Rekero is in prime position. Already boasting impressive views over the Talek River, the camp is currently undergoing a major refurbishment that will see considerable improvements to the viewing deck, the lounge and dining areas, as well as the family units.

LOCATION
Location of Rekero Camp
The Masai Mara is in southwest Kenya, on the border with Tanzania. It is one of the most popular safari destinations in Africa — and for good reason. Every year, from July until October, around 1.5 million wildebeest cross the crocodile-filled Mara and Talek rivers as they follow the rains in and out of Kenya. One of their Talek crossing points is just 150 metres from Rekero’s dining area, and the Mara River is only a short drive from camp.
Witnessing a river crossing is like watching a live National Geographic film. Huge herds of wildebeest thunder across the river, plunging from the banks into the water. Crocodile lie in wait. Billowing dust, thudding hooves and a chorus of grunts fill the air as the animals cross in one of the most dramatic migration events in Africa. At Rekero, you don’t even need to leave camp to watch the action unfold.
Outside of migration season, one of the highlights of staying in the Masai Mara is viewing the predators that prowl these plains. It’s no coincidence that many wildlife documentaries, including BBC’s Big Cat Diary and Disney’s African Cats, have been filmed here. There is a high concentration of lions — including our resident Rekero pride — plus cheetahs and leopards.

A typical day on safari at Rekero Camp
The best time to see wildlife is at dusk and dawn, when the temperatures are cooler and nocturnal animals are either beginning their night’s activities or winding down.
Generally, you'll start the day bright and early with a wake-up call and tea or coffee. Enjoy breakfast before you depart for your morning game drive(or have it packed as a picnic to take with you). We head out on our first game drive just as it begins to get light, so time differs slightly depending on the season. If you have booked a private safari vehicle, you can plan a schedule with your guide. Arrive back in camp mid-morning, with a chance to freshen up before lunch.
After a leisurely lunch, enjoy siesta. Read a book or just relax and enjoy the views from your tent or one of our viewing decks. Refuel with afternoon tea before we depart for your evening game drive with sundowners. You'll be back in time for drinks around the campfire and dinner — the perfect chance to unwind after a long day in the bush.

Wildlife viewing is the main event at Rekero, with two game drives per day, led by expert local guides. Whether you’re fascinated by predators or a keen birder, experiences can be tailored to suit your interests. Our game-viewing vehicles are open to allow for unobscured sightings and photographs. And don’t worry if your devices are running low on power. Our safari vehicles are fitted with charging points for easy charging and fridges to keep drinks cold.

Big-cat conservation
The Masai Mara is famous for its big cats, and Kenya takes wildlife protection seriously. Asilia can arrange for a researcher from Kenya Wildlife Trust to present a talk in camp about their work with local communities and how they protect animals such as lions, cheetahs and leopards. Alternatively, guests can book a visit to the Kenya Wildlife Trust and Maa Trust research units to learn more. Advance bookings are essential.

Hot-air balloon safari
There are few sights more breathtaking than that of the wildlife-rich Mara plains from the air. Start the day with a sunrise hot-air balloon flight for a bird’s-eye view of this awe-inspiring landscape. Hot-air balloon rides are subject to weather conditions and at an additional cost.

There are two family tents at Rekero, each with two separate bedrooms, sleeping up to five people per tent. The minimum age for children is 5, but we may be able to accommodate younger children, depending on camp occupancy. We have no specific children’s programme at Rekero, but love welcoming families and will try to adapt activities as much as possible. Please talk to your agent about private vehicle options.

Meals and refreshments
Meals are usually enjoyed communally. Our chefs are up at dawn busily preparing everything from scratch. For breakfast, we offer either a light continental buffet spread or a full English fry-up, as well as fresh fruit and juices. At lunch, salads and veggies are served with a main course. If you prefer to stay out in the bush, we can pack a picnic. At 4pm, join us for cake and tea or a refreshing iced coffee before your evening drive. We’ll see you later for a three-course dinner.

Though the migration passes through the Mara from July to October, there’s plenty to see throughout the year. January through April is one of our favourite times to travel. There’s lots of wildlife to see — especially big cats — and fewer crowds. July and August are the busiest months due to the migration and holiday season. If you want fewer tourists on your safari, we recommend avoiding this period if possible.

Why travel at this time
The Mara isn’t as busy during this time of year, mainly because the migration is in the southern Serengeti. But there is still plenty to see, including big cats, elephants, giraffes and occasionally black rhinos. It’s also when a lot of animals give birth. Clear skies and flowers that bloom after the short rains of November and December make for wonderful photographic conditions. Migratory birds have arrived in the Mara, too.

The long rains start in March, but January and February may still see the occasional shower. It’s the hottest time of year, too. The average temperature peaks at 28°C/82°F in February with an average low of 13°C/55°F from January to March.

Why travel at this time
There are fewer tourists during the wet season, so wildlife sightings will be more private. It’s also a great chance to take advantage of the cheaper rates. Roads are usually only affected by the rains in May.

Why travel at this time
Peak season is dry, and the migration wildebeest herds have started arriving from the Mara. It’s in these months that you stand the best chance of seeing them cross the Mara River and the Talek River that runs in front of our camp.

Why travel at this time
It’s possible to see some of the last river crossings as the herds make their way back into the Serengeti throughout October. Migratory birds begin to arrive in November with the short rains. There are also fewer visitors in the Mara.

This camp was outstanding! Out of the 4 camps our group stayed at while in Africa, this camp was our favorite by far. The staff, service, location, food, and drinks were all top notch. It was amazing staying along the river with wildlife right outside your door and falling asleep to the sounds of the river. The rooms and common space are beautiful and comfortable. The game drives and our guide were great, and we were even able to witness a zebra river crossing. I would highly recommend this camp.
A thoughtful camp in the Mara. Food was great, Mercy made sure all of our needs were covered! Sleeping in a tent surrounded by elephants and hippos was quite the experience. They have 24 hour security to keep an eye on the wildlife! Karia was an amazing guide, who made sure I always had great angle and lighting for the animal shots. He also took some great photos for us as well!!
This was our second incredible stop on our trip and just as wonderful as our first! SaRuni was the most wonderful guide, and so kind and generous with his knowledge. Even though he does this everyday, he seemed just as excited when we saw the leopard eating the hippo! Steve and the rest of the staff were so welcoming and wonderful. And what a great location on the river. How fun to see the hippos and crocodiles, giraffes and wildebeest, crossing the river as we waited for lunch! Thank you for adding to my trip of a lifetime. I definitely want to come back!
